I had the honor of working with the Founder & Creative Director of Lime Crime Cosmetics, Doe Deer, on her campaign for the “Aquataenia Mermaid” eyeshadow palette. Traci Hines recommended me as their next stylist for the shoot. Doe’s main inspiration for the look came from Nicole West’s“Moon Rider Mermaid” doll. Luckly, I already had Traci’s mermaid tale from the Sirenia Mermaid shoot. The seashell bra was made with real troches niloticus seashells that I embellished with large sequins, pearls, and crystals. Working with Doe and Traci on this shoot was pure magic! Doe and her crew made a beautiful glitter moon for Traci to pose with and the results were amazing!! Traci also modeled the costume at Lime Crime’s IMATS booth. If you love make-up and would like to have these colors in your own collection, you can purchase the Aquataenia Mermaid Pallette HERE
For the most part, I understand what you're saying. I think mermaids come in as many varieties as there are underwater creatures...old mermaids, male mermaids, mermaids of color, mermaids of different species.
This picture is very glamorous and the model is no doubt beautiful, but what makes the picture unique is the idea behind it. Instead of a man in the moon, we have a mermaid, and it's unique because mermaids belong in the ocean. The white tail with the blue hues works really well and gives it a cool feeling while the pin-up pose and beautiful model makes it welcoming. This is an advertisement for makeup so of course the model is going to be dressed up but overall the idea is very surreal. A mermaid ON THE MOON? And the reason I felt it was cool and nominated it is because of not only the idea but because it reminds me of vintage photos. There's quite a few vintage postcards with girls posing on a moon prop and this made me think fondly of those cards. For instance, see this 1902 photo from the movie "A Trip to the Moon" i1.ytimg.com/vi/_pfdQ_ftHQs/0.… They were kind of an old timey pinup theme in some cards and this reminded me of those classic pinups.
So yes, it is extremely glamorous (and it is because it's a makeup campaign) but I believe the idea was what made it chosen for DD. It's very surreal and that is why it is so special.
